A brief guide to understanding Emotional Literacy: one of Motional's Executive Functioning Subdomains. What is Emotional Literacy and why is it important?

Emotional Literacy is one of the subdomains in Motional, within the Domain of Executive Functioning.
Broadly, Emotional Literacy refers to the ability to identify, understand, express, and regulate our emotions, as well as understand the emotions of others. In Motional, the Emotional Literacy Subdomain focuses on having a vocabulary of emotions, recognising how emotions can influence behaviour, and utilising emotions in a healthy way.
Emotional literacy is essential because it enables individuals to communicate their emotions effectively, build healthy relationships, and make sound decisions. It also helps individuals to be more empathetic and understanding towards others and develop social skills necessary for later life. Emotional literacy is particularly important in children as it provides a foundation for their social and emotional development.
Emotionally literate children are better equipped to manage their emotions, cope with stress, and build positive relationships with peers and adults. They are also more likely to have higher self-esteem and confidence, which can lead to greater success in school and beyond.
