Find answers to some of the questions you might be wondering about following the August 2023 update to Snapshot questions

Why have the questions / statements on a Snapshot changed?

Motional is now 5 years old and we have been listening and learning along the way! The latest version of Motional uses updated language to simplify and clarify meaning, but the intent of each question remains the same. So whilst they might appear different, they haven’t completely changed! The questions as a whole have been reviewed and revised to remove any overlap and to clarify the difference where questions may appear to be asking the same or similar things.

You will also see that we have updated the Always / Never descriptors (found under the question mark symbol on each question). Again, this is to clarify meaning and improve accuracy and speed of use.

Why have some of the Domain and Subdomain titles on a Snapshot changed?

The evidence base regarding emotional health and wellbeing is developing at pace. In order to keep aligned with the growing literature we have renamed certain domains and subdomains. As we introduce new features, tools, blogs, bite-size learning and references this will aid clarity - exciting times!

What will happen to my existing Snapshots and Groupshots?

Since the updated questions still ask about the same skills or areas of emotional development, the updated questions and question descriptors will show on all new and existing Snapshots. The Snapshot scores will be unaffected by this update.

What about the accuracy of scoring now the wording of the questions is different?

There is an argument that as soon as you change the language in a question that it shouldn’t be compared to the previous question version. However, as Motional is not a clinical tool and the intent of each question remains the same, the benefits of introducing simplified language far outweigh any 'potential psychometric property' impact.

For ease of comparison, the questions have been updated across all historic results too. Again an argument could be made that there may be slight variances in how a user might interpret questions in a slightly different way. However, this decision was taken in balance to ensure, as ever, that Motional remains as practical to use as possible, progressive and developmental in its approach, with as much consistency as possible.
